For there to be value in words spoken or written, the rhetorical situation must be one that involves discourse through differing opinions, procedures, or purposes. The origin of discourse is derived not only from the situation, but what the situation has to offer in terms of change. This introduces the concept of exigence, which is anything that can possibly be modified by rhetoric and is likely to become the main force behind a speaker. Exigence is something the speaker feels inclined to make a point about given the circumstance. However, exigences can appear and remain unsolved during rhetoric.
